Fujitsu's traditional forte has been lighter laptops, such as the LifeBook S series, but the new LifeBook N series shows that the company can hang with the heavy hitters, too. This desktop replacement's Pentium 4 processor and ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics chip helped it finish at the top of its class in CNET Labs' benchmarks. Its exceptionally bright, 15-inch screen features an extrawide viewing angle. An integrated DVD-R/-RW drive lets you watch videos or store massive files to disc, while built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi offers fast wireless access to those files. Despite all these features, the LifeBook N comes in at a comparatively reasonable 8.1 pounds, making it an all-around cool system for gamers and graphics pros who take occasional trips.

During operation, the LifeBook N series sounds somewhat like a jetliner because of its vociferous fan. Otherwise, the system's design is manageable. The 12.8-by-11-by-2-inch case is average for that of a desktop replacement, especially considering the built-in floppy drive and the swappable modular bay. Add the AC adapter to the 8.1-pound notebook, and its total travel weight comes to 9.7 pounds.

The LifeBook N series' 15-inch display is a design highlight. In addition to a high, 1,400x1,050 native resolution, the display also includes the company's Multidomain Vertical Alignment (MVA) technology, which allows the screen to block out a lot of light. The result is a high 400:1
contrast ratio and nearly 160-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angles.

The customary touchpad and two mouse buttons are parked underneath the keyboard.

The full-size keyboard sports widely spaced, comfortable keys. Four programmable buttons above the keyboard launch Internet access, an e-mail app, and two additional applications of your choice; a convenient status light next to the e-mail button alerts you to new messages. To conserve battery power, a switch in the upper-left corner turns off Wi-Fi when it's not needed. The touchpad and the two mouse buttons are parked underneath the keyboard, along with a sculpted scroll button.

The LifeBook N series offers an adequate selection of ports and slots. The left edge features a FireWire port, plus headphone and microphone jacks. The right edge offers two Type II PC Card slots. The back edge includes VGA, Ethernet, 56Kbps modem, and four USB 2.0 ports.
